I cannot believe my baby girl is going to be two.  And I really can’t believe that her birthday party is sneaking up on me.  I’ve been trying to haul through all of my fun DIY cowgirl themed decorations like her photo booths {western themed and polaroid themed} as well as some other surprises that I’ll reveal later.

You’ve probably figured out by now that I like projects that are quick, easy and cheap.  My favorite kind are the ones that can go from zero to tied up with a nice little bow during one or two nap times {luckily my kid gives me some good naps}.  This was one of those awesome projects, and I’m totally thrilled with the way it turned out.  It may even become decor in her room after this if I can find a place for it, and would be perfect for any western or cowboy/cowgirl themed space.

Hubby yanked the wood for the background off of an old palate that we had laying around {and said it was a huge pain…thanks Hubby…}, but you could also nail multiple regular boards together or use one flat piece of wood…whatever works for your space.

Supplies

Wood palate or other wood for background
White paint, water, paint brush and paper towels
Glue gun
Rope {I used some like this, but you can get a thicker or thinner size depending on the size of your palate and the name you’ll be writing}

How To…

1) White wash the wood background.  To do this, mix equal parts paint and water and paint on with a paintbrush in the direction of the grain of the wood.  When the paint has dried for about a minute, use a paper towel to lightly wipe off the top layer of paint in the direction of the grain, leaving some white and exposing more of the wood grain.  Let dry completely.
2) If desired, lightly trace the text that you would like to use on the wood with pencil.  I skipped this part, but if you’re a perfectionist, you might want to go for it.
3) Grab your rope and glue gun and get going.  Figure out how you want the letter to look, cut the piece of rope in the desired length and place it on the wood to eyeball how you would like it to look.  Then, draw in the letter with glue {use a lot of it!  see below…} and immediately place the rope on top, holding it down for at least 10-15 seconds, or until it feels dry.  I did each letter as one or more separate pieces of rope and made sure that they had little tails so that they could appear to “attach” to the next letter for a cursive feel.

That’s it!  Enjoy!
